Self Empowerment

Self Empowerment
by Susan Bertalotto
March 2009

Self Empowerment is a buzz-word that has been used to teach people to increase their self-image and be more assertive in daily life. The premise is the process of finding the resourcefulness inside an individual which translates into a stronger, worthier, more confident person.

The Bible refers to Self Empowerment in these scriptures:

Matthew 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Mark 8:34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Luke 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

1st Corinthians 3:18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

SELF Empowerment is not in the Bible, other than as works of the flesh. Then why are “Christian” organizations and individuals promoting it as though it was a fruit of the Spirit of God, and not solely the wisdom of man?

One reason is Love of Money (1st Timothy 6:10). There is much money to be made in enabling people (mostly women) to excel above others, to be ambitious in their spirituality (emulation-a work of the flesh-Galatians 5:19-21). It’s much cheaper (and doctrinally sound) to go with what Jesus said “…let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”

Another reason is Power. On this page at reference.com, it is stated (bold added):

The term Human Empowerment covers a vast landscape of meanings, interpretations, definitions and disciplines ranging from psychology and philosophy to the highly commercialized Self-Help industry and Motivational sciences.

[...]

The process which enables one to gain power, authority and influence over others, institutions or society. Empowerment is probably the totality of the following or similar capabilities:-

  • Having decision-making power of one’s own
  • Having access to information and resources for taking proper decision
  • Having a range of options from which you can make choices (not just yes/no, either/or.)
  • Ability to exercise assertiveness in collective decision making
  • Having positive thinking on the ability to make change
  • Ability to learn skills for improving one’s personal or group power.
  • Ability to change others’ perceptions by democratic means.
  • Involving in the growth process and changes that is never-ending and self-initiated
  • Increasing one’s positive self-image and overcoming stigma
  • Increasing one’s ability in discreet thinking to sort out right and wrong

The power of God is not what the Self-Help industry is selling. As I stated in the article Metaphysics and Jesus Christ:

If there isn’t any money to be made, then what would be the point? Notice that all the proponents of metaphysics will take a concept, create a process of implementation, and SELL it. Jesus Christ can not be sold! Therefore, you won’t find anyone who is selling the real salvation of man. Metaphysics proponents are working very hard to present a facsimile, a substitute, that unsuspecting, undiscerning people will buy, or buy into.

Here are some buzz-words/phrases that go along with Self Empowerment:

self-image
self-esteem
find your destiny/identity
discover your God-given gifts
be a champion
we are little gods
recognize your potential
live your dream
live the dream God has for you
poverty is of the devil
realize the power inside you
discover how to dig down deep and “grab” your determination
transformation is the key to a better life in God

This instruction erroneously teaches that we choose what our destiny will be based on the world’s perception of greatness, positive image, comfort, and power — based on metaphysics, an occult/New Age concept of controlling ourSELVES and the world WITHOUT Jesus Christ. Self Empowerment depends on humans’ efforts, not God’s power. The proponents are training undiscerning Christians a “new” unbiblical spirituality — one that exalts itself against the knowledge of God (2nd Corinthians 10:5).

Don’t be deceived by Self-Empowerment and its euphemisms. Just because one feels better about one’s SELF is no reason to abandon the clear mandates in scripture.

Use the Bible as your only source of information. Do not believe any doctrine or teaching that is not substantiated by the Word of God.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
blaspheme
to speak irreverently of God or
sacred things; utter impieties
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thousands of years ago, Satan, a former anointed cherubim angel, was convinced he could raise his throne above the stars of God and make himself like the Most High. But his hopes of ruling over Almighty God and the universe He created was only a pipe dream. God clearly demonstrated Who was in charge and booted Satan and one-third of the angels out of heaven (Ezekiel chapter 28; Genesis chapter 3; Isaiah chapter 14; Revelation chapter 12).

Satan’s efforts to play wiser than God backfired. It was a costly decision on his part, as well as those he conned into following him. Currently, Satan roams the earth roaring like a lion seeking to kill and destroy, and is the first blasphemer recorded in God’s written word, the Bible (1 Peter 5:8; Genesis chapter 3).

But Satan’s days are numbered. His fate, and the fate of those who follow him is sealed (Revelation 20:1-10).

Throughout the ages, blasphemers have come from all walks of life, races, and religious belief systems. Although the word blasphemer brings to mind the atheist, a New Age UFO cult-leader, or a shrewd, egg-headed man in Siberia who claims to be “Jesus Christ,” oddly enough, there are blasphemers who claim to be Christian, many of whom carry Bibles in their hands.

Here is a list of what all blasphemers have in common, whether or not they claim to be Christian:

  • they mock the God of the Bible (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) and refer to God with words and actions that bring dishonor to the Creator and Sustainer of the universe.they downplay sound, Biblical theology and teachings, and twist and misinterpret Scripture to conform to their particular belief system.
  • they play wiser than God, attempt to reduce God to their human level of mentality, and believe God can be manipulated according to their own thoughts, whims, and fancies.
  • to them, God is no more than a cool dude waving a peace sign, and a fellow goatee-wearing, earring-dangling beatnik with a good sense of humor.
  • they cause doubt, and even shipwreck the faith in weak and innocent believers. They drive the unsaved further into sin and further away from Jesus Christ (i.e., If this is Christianity, I want no part of it!).
  • they are severely malnourished in God’s written word, and driven by their own feelings, emotions, and experiences.
  • they rely on “new revelations” from their corrupt leaders, and consider themselves the holiest of all. Many have been conned into believing they are “God’s chosen army” who will usher in a worldwide revival.
  • they promote each other, mimic each other, and feed off of each other’s folly. They compete with each other to see who can come up with the most outlandish, blasphemous terms and catch-phrases.
  • they condition and desensitize new recruits over a period of time to believe what they say–even over the Bible. They are the deceived leading the deceived; the manipulated leading the manipulated.
  • they push the gullible into supporting their “ministry” with financial donations and by purchasing books, videos, and DVDs–all of which fund trips around the world and expensive lifestyles.
  • they ridicule discerning Christians who reach out with correction and rebuke, and warn them to “stop attacking” and “stop judging” the anointed. Yet, they stand guilty of the very thing they accuse others of doing.
  • those who disagree with their ungodly behavior and damnable teachings are considered either sub-Christian or religious zealots, Pharisees, cultists, fear-mongers, hate-mongers, sensationalists, liars, witch hunters, heresy hunters, unsaved, and haters of Jesus Christ, who are possessed by a “religious spirit.”

but in reality, in these last days it is they who are …lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; avoid such men as these (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

What you are about to read is a list of terms and catch-phrases from the mouths and writings of blasphemers within the hyper-Charismatic movement–a movement gone wild and, perhaps in some cases, mentally disturbed (refer to the YouTube video, John Crowder: Magic Carpet Ride by VinnieActs2030).

As you read the terms and catch-phrases, if you truly believe that Jesus is your drug, the Holy Spirit is a crack pipe, the gospel is thick and juicy mud, and that the glory of God is Papa’s milky goo, be encouraged to study the following Scriptures, for they are God’s written commands and warnings to those who flippantly mock and dishonor the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in callous disrespect, dishonor, and irreverence:

You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain (Exodus 20:7).

You shall not curse God, nor curse a ruler of your people (Exodus 22:28).

You shall not swear falsely by My name, so as to profane the name of your God; I am the LORD (Leviticus 19:2).

Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? And against whom have you raised your voice, and haughtily lifted up your eyes? Against the Holy One of Israel! (2 Kings 19:22)

“Now therefore, what do I have here,” declares the LORD, “seeing that My people have been taken away without cause?” Again the LORD declares, “Those who rule over them howl, and My name is continually blasphemed all day long” (Isaiah 52:5).

“Therefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “Yet in this your fathers have blasphemed Me by acting treacherously against Me” (Ezekiel 20:7).

Fools mock at sin, but among the upright there is good will (Proverbs 14:9).

For “THE NAME OF GOD IS BLASPHEMED AMONG THE GENTILES BECAUSE OF YOU,” just as it is written (Romans 2:24).

This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight, keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith. Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they will be taught not to blaspheme (1 Timothy 1:18-20).

Do they not blaspheme the fair name by which you have been called? (James 2:7)

And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven (Revelation 13:6).

Closing comments…

In what can be best described as savagery in the name of God, the above terms and catch-phrases are the product of twisted minds, and a bi-product of doctrines of demons the Apostle Paul warned about in 1 Timothy 4:1-2.

Question: Why would anyone who claims to love God turn around and mock, scorn, and blaspheme His holy and precious Name? The Bible provides the answers:

For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things (Philippians 3:18-19).

Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived (2 Timothy 3:12-13).

For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain (Titus 1:10-11).

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap (Galatians 6:7).

On the outside, the hyper-Charismatic movement is growing, and has spent years trying to convince Christians that its “apostles,” prophets, teachers, evangelists, and revivalists are legitimate and a “must have” within the body of Christ. But in the background, it has spent years producing a steady stream of male and female heretics, false prophets, and false healers.

But growth and popularity within what claims to be Christian doesn’t necessarily mean it is sanctioned by God. The hyper-Charismatic movement separated from truth and common sense many years ago. Thus, what appears to be a steady growth and popularity is, in reality, a steady decline and a fulfillment of Scripture:

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths (2 Timothy 4:3-4).

If God were their Father, they would love and understand Jesus Christ. Their terms and words would be filled with honor, respect, and humility for the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (John 8:42-44). But blasphemers mimic their father, the devil, who was cast out of heaven thousands of years ago. Unless there is repentance, those who blaspheme God will be prevented from entering heaven:

But these men revile the things which they do not understand; and the things which they know by instinct, like unreasoning animals, by these things they are destroyed. Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, and for pay they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam, and perished in the rebellion of Korah. These are the men who are hidden reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you without fear, caring for themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, doubly dead, uprooted; wild waves of the sea, casting up their own shame like foam; wandering stars, for whom the black darkness has been reserved forever (Jude 1:10-13).

Blasphemers present a clear and present danger to the spiritual welfare of the believer, as well as those searching for the real Jesus Christ. The damage caused by these men and women to individuals, families, and the cause of Christ is beyond words.

If Jesus Died Spiritually, Was God Dead for Three Days?

Posted by Simplicity In Christ on September 21, 2008

A friend told me there is a very important doctrine I must believe in order to “keep my salvation”. It is the doctrine/belief that Jesus Christ died spiritually for three days, after He died on the cross. My response was to ask: If Jesus died spiritually, was God dead for three days?

Jesus Christ is God made flesh, the second person of the Godhead (The Word), fully God and fully human. Since Jesus’ physical body died on the cross, what was left? His Spirit. And since He is God, how could the second person of the Godhead be DEAD for three days?

This doctrine has been around for a few years, perpetuated by Joyce Meyer, Kenneth Copeland, E W Kenyon, Kenneth Hagin, Frederick Price, Benny Hinn and many others from the Word/Faith movement. Jesus didn’t finish the sacrifice for sin on the cross; the salvation plan was not yet completed. He had to descend into HELL AND DIE and be tormented by demons for three days. Does that doctrine hold up biblically?

The following is an article by Mike Oppenheimer of Let Us Reason Ministries that very clearly shows the unscriptural nature of this heresy:

Did Jesus descend into Hell or Hades after he died on the cross?

While on the cross for three hours, after all the sins were laid upon him Jesus cried out that God forsook him (looked away, breaking fellowship). After nearly 6 hours on the cross Jesus said that He entrusted His spirit into the Fathers hands before He died. He was totally restored before He died. His Spirit was not committed into anyone’s hands, but the Father’s.

So there is no possibility of him going to hell for any reason of completing the sacrifice or punishment. He did finish on the cross everything that was needed for salvation. If Jesus went to Hell this means the Father did not accept His sacrifice, but instead rejected it.

While Jesus was on the cross He promised the thief on the cross next to him that he would be with Him in paradise that very day (Luke 23:43). If the thief was not in paradise with Him but would have entered into suffering with Jesus and Jesus lied. Paradise was still in the earth called Abrahams bosom until Christ raised and went to heaven (then he took those saints with him to heaven Eph.4:8).

The Bible-Acts 2:27, “For you will not leave my soul in Hades, nor will you allow your Holy One to see corruption.” Peter repeats himself just a few verses later in Acts 2:31: “His soul was not left in Hell (actual word is Hades), nor did his flesh did see corruption.

Notice it says neither soul nor body saw corruption (decay). If he was a sinner would mean He did see corruption. The verse quoted by Peter is Psalm 16:10. Some Bible versions use the word hell; a more accurate translation would be Sheol. In Hebrew, this encompasses the place for both the righteous and unrighteous that have died. Sheol is used 65 times in the Old Testament; rarely is it used to denote a place of torment (Luke 16:23 is one of the rare scriptures in the New Testament). The customary meaning is realm of the dead, meaning the state of death or the grave (Genesis 37:35; 1 Samuel 2:6; Psalm 141:7).

The New Testament Greek equivalent is Hades, and gives us a more detailed explanation of the realm of the dead. It is divided into two compartments; on one side is Abraham’s bosom for the righteous, on the other side is what we call hell, which Jesus said: “was prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41). We find in Luke 16:23, 25 that in Hades there is a place of punishment (called Hell), and a place of rest, (Abraham’s bosom), depending on which side you are on. The context should bear it out. If Jesus went to hell for any amount of time as a punishment then the cross was insufficient for our redemption.

For example in 1 Cor 15:55: “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?

The Greek word for both death and Hades is thanatos (properly, an adjective used as a noun) death (literally or figuratively)

In Rev. 1:18 “I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.”

The word for death is thanatos, Hades is haides in Greek, from 1 (as negative particle) and 1492; properly, unseen, i.e. “Hades” or the place (state) of departed souls: KJV– grave, hell.

What actually did happen to Jesus’ spirit? We know He committed His spirit to God. I Peter 3:18 states, “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened (made alive) by the Spirit.” Christ died in body only (put to death in the sphere of the flesh), not the spirit. And continued to exist in spirit, just as He did before He came to earth. His existence in His earthly life ended but He continued His life existing in the spirit inside the earth, in Hades, before He resurrected.

It is His flesh that was made alive again, resurrected. Christ died in body only. We can prove this by 1 Peter 3:19-20: “By whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison, who formerly were disobedient, when once the divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah…” This event occurred between Christ’s death and resurrection. Jesus went to those who were believers and presented his victory at the cross. He also went to those that were incarcerated from the time of the flood. The word for “preach” is Kerysso in Greek, meaning to proclaim or announce (judgment). This is different then to evangelize and proclaim the good news of reconciliation for salvation, which is used in 1 Peter 4:6. This proclamation was directed to either the fallen angels or the human souls that died in the flood or both (Jude 6; 2 Peter 2:4). Announcing to them their judgment is imminent, as he had just come from the victory on the cross.

Again Hades, Sheol encompasses the whole realm of the dead and the context must bear out what it says.

We Are gods

To those who believe that we are gods, I would like to ask one simple question:

Why was Eve deceived by satan when he said “you shall be as gods” if she was ALREADY a god?

Even though Paula White has broken off ongoing relations to Without Walls, the church she and her husband, Randy, founded in Tampa, FL, she has continued with her own marketing scheme of profitable feel-good seminars.  She is now hooked up with The Epicenter which, along with pastor Rick Hawkins, are just her speed — seeker-sensitive, driven by cash, and teaching the doctrine of “destiny”.

White says about Mentors:

Look to people who see what God has destined for you and who encourage you to pursue your destiny and to develop your gift from God.

On the Epicenter site:

THIS WILL BE A YEAR THAT WE WALK IN DESTINY… JER.1:5, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

What does the Word of God have to say about destiny?  In the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, the word “destiny” isn’t found. “Destiny” is referenced in the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible, but every reference is regarding evil and/or destruction. Both versions write of “predestination” or “predestined”, but that has nothing to do with destiny. So the Bible says nothing about “discovering/pursuing/finding your destiny”, “walk in destiny”, etc.

The Epicenter’s reference to the scripture in Jeremiah is taken out of context. The context is God speaking to Jeremiah, telling him that he was sanctified and ordained a prophet. The passage does not say that everyone (or even a few people) is sanctified before one is born. That concept would be metaphysics, a New Age/Occult teaching (the divine spark; God is in everything and everyone).

The doctrine of destiny which Paula White, Rick Hawkins, Casey Treat, Joyce Meyer, and many others share is nothing more than a substitute for the Real Answer – Jesus Christ.

My Destiny

Meyer is a teacher of the Word / Faith heresy

I discovered my destiny by trial and error…When you go shopping for a new outfit, you probably try on many different things until you find what is comfortable, looks good on you and fits you best. Why not do the same thing with discovering your calling in life? As you take steps of faith, your destiny will unfold. (emphasis added)
